Mt. Top Removal Sucks Balls Tee Shirt

So I started a store on Zazzle's artist-driven sub-site Arts Projekt a few weeks ago. Since then I've slowly been populating the products section with new designs that I don't I've shared much at all until now. I just posted what might be my favorite design so far. It's a little ditty about how I strongly disapprove of decapitating mountains and making a big smelly mess.

New Hadron Colliderscope Comic:

I recently illustrated a comic written by my friend, Michael Bramley, for his sci-fi web comic series, Hadron Colliderscope. It's the innocent tale of a gentle insect-eating race, the Gum Rums.

If you all are interested, I'm thinking about posting some sketches and writing about the process of drawing the comic. Maybe a little later in the week.

Process for Blood Dumpster Tee

Today I was working on the first T-shirt for my artist collective, The Blood Dumpster. I took a bunch of screenshots during the process so I thought I'd share.

Here's the first sketch. I tend to go pretty literal with things, so i drew bloody things coming out of a dumpster. (I assure you the collective isn't all about drawing dumpsters and blood. Mostly. )

Pretty fun, but I wanted to push it farther and add some detail. After some feedback from the group and several attempts at refining the sketch I came up with this draft.

I scanned it and opened the file in illustrator. I rotated it a little because I sorta drew it on a slant and i wanted teh dumpster to be more upright. Here as some of my initial "inking" lines.

I'm generally using  a single custom brush with he Brush tool. You can see I'm ready planning out some of the colors.

We're planning on doing it on a black or red shirt, most likely. Therefore, I wanted to create a white backing/border so all the black lines would still read on a black background.

Here I started doing some fills with a halftone pattern to get some depth out of the limited palette.

Cleaned up the shading shapes. Looks pretty awesome on white background, but we want to print on a black shirt...

...and that border looks a lot sloppier in high-contrast.

So i went in a made it a lot tighter, and dropped it from the blood splashes and smaller parts that didn't quite need the outline. Last, I added The Blood Dumpster logo and my ol' siggy on a skull. Also the nipple is squirting. That way, you know, it looks more nippley.

Illustration Friday: Perspective

I love how the topics at Illustration Friday have been very open to interpretation lately. i wasn't sure if I wanted to go with technical visual perspective, or try illustrating the notion of people having different points of of view.  The end result is definitely more literal than I had hoped to go. However, I like that as a viewer, you might try to conceive of this situation from the farther character's point of view.

P.S. Here's a detail of the little guy.

Weirdfolio o'Ten

^ Heez duh middul wun.

Getting freaky and surreal in illustrator tonight. This drawing is very similar to something you might find in my sketchbook, where, of course, my thought stream out with less inhibition.  I had a similar image drawn on my messenger bag that I totally forgot about until Laura pointed it out to me the other day. Since then I've been redrawing it sporadically when my mind goes blank but my pencil is still moving. So most likely, won't be the last middul wun.

I also rew something else interesting that I think I'll save for later, perhaps as a T-shirt design.

Illustration Friday: "Muddy"

Woo this is my first Illustration Friday entry ever. I actually tried doing a  couple ink pieces on cardboard first, but they just didn't seem "me" although they were visually muddy. I tend to be a literal guy, although I try to defy it, so I caved and did literal "mud" illustration.

Rapunzel Revamp

Hey peoples. I entered another T-shirt design to Threadless.com. I had been wanting to submit an earlier design but I wanted to totally redraw it and make it more fun and dynamic and IN YER FACE! Hopefully, I succeeded and millions will want to buy it. Or at least not look away when they see it.

Here's what it used to look like.

As of this post it's still got 5 days of voting left. So go to it!
